We’re all familiar with user devices such as PCs, tablets, and phones and they will remain an important part of Intel and will continue to invest in maximizing returns in these businesses moving forward. These devices are welcoming billions and billions of things to the Internet by 2020, 50 billion devices, and 212 billion sensors will join the Internet. At this point, 47 percent of total devices and connections will be machine-to-machine. Truly the rise of the machines. These things will generate tremendous amounts of data. Considering this in 2020, it’s expected that the average Internet user will generate approximately 1.5 gigabytes of traffic per day; that’s up from 650 megabytes in 2015. Certainly, a huge amount of data until you consider the machines – A smart hospital will generate 3,000 gigabytes per day, self-driving cars will generate over 4,000 gigabytes per, a connected plane will generate 40,000 gigabytes per day and a connected factory will generate 1 million gigabytes per day.
This data needs to be analyzed and interpreted in real-time and what’s what we are focusing on one of the best examples of Intel’s AI strategy is at automated driving data produced by autonomous vehicles is immense that’s 4 terabytes per data per day. Every day compute required for autonomous vehicles is even more astounding. Approximately 1 car in one hour of driving will require 5 exaflops of computing to safely keep itself on the road supporting just 20000 automated vehicles for one day is estimated to require one exaflop of sustained compute or a billion floating-point operations per second so as we can see really big data’s problem is that there’s so much data.
How are you going to process it? Do you have enough compute power? Enough storage to store it? or the infrastructure to move it around between the compute and the storage devices?
In short what HPC or high performance computing is just simply leveraging distributed compute resources to solve complex problems with a large data set so when we say large data set we mean terabytes petabytes even Zeta bytes of data that need to be processed and it needs to be processed as close to real-time in many cases as possible but certainly minutes to hours, not days weeks or even months. So what typically happens is the user will submit a job to the cluster manager that cluster manager will then run the workload on the distributed different pieces of resources like CPUs, FPGAs, GPUs, and disk drives all interconnected by a network then they get the results back and they can analyze those results to make decisions. Typical workloads that are common today range across many different vertical markets such as Life Sciences, astrophysics, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular dynamics, weather, and climate prediction and artificial intelligence crosses many of these industries and is one of the hottest topics.
Today cybersecurity and financial analysis are also becoming more and more popular the rest fall into kind of a big lump sum of big data analytics umbrella which is really a lot of things to a lot of people let’s go through the process of solving a big data analytics problem like the ones discussed on the previous slide step one define the question to the problem being examined for example what products sell best to at Christmas to men ages 18 to 25 or what’s the optimal traffic pattern of vehicles around the downtown area of a major city another could be how does this chemical reaction with another step two is to ingest and store the data to be used to answer that question.
So for example the image-net data set can be used for training of deep learning topologies or the kitten Kitty vision benchmark suite can be used for autonomous driving or the USDA food composition database and many many more. Data is king with High Performance Computing while there are many publicly available datasets for a variety of different markets many organizations spend years accumulating data for their private use to solve those questions. Step three is to take the data clean that data prepare it and transform the data into a format that can be used in processed by the HPC workload. This could mean resizing images to be processed or formatting tables to be queried data can be reduced to make it more manageable and more organized. Step four is to actually perform the analysis on the data, step five is to receive the results in their context and finally step six is that basically, the last step in the chain was now that you have that data and you want to make decisions or actions based on those results so data comes in many forms in these data sets it could be structured data like a spreadsheet data that exists as a relational database organized and easily addressable rows and columns.
There’s also semi-structured data where the data is not formatted but still has associated information that makes it more amenable to processing than just plain raw data such as key in value and finally there’s unstructured raw data that doesn’t map well to mainstream relational databases such as text documents webpages audio and video files and many others so there’s a little bit of terminology that we want to use.
About where data gets stored the first is this concept of a Data Lake which takes the raw data in from a variety of sources in its native format it uses a flat-file architecture to store the data and it’s not limited to just unstructured data the data warehouse is a storage repository that stores structured data in a table or tabular format using files and other hierarchical folder structures the raw data from the Data Lake may be needed to be extracted transformed and then loaded into a data warehouse there are many open-source tools that are available today to make processing the data easier they provide tools and infrastructure for processing both structured and unstructured data. Apache Hadoop is one of the most common HPC frameworks with it at Apache Spark becoming equally as popular there are things like Apache Cassandra which is a no SQL database management system while postGRES SQL is an object-relational database management system and SAP HANA is an in-memory column-oriented relational database management system with many other systems available we’re not going into detail on what these are they’ll be follow-on training and of course you can always Google to find out more information about each one of these.
One of the most useful and common functions that are used in preparing the data is called MapReduce this breaks down a massive task into smaller pieces and allows them to be processed in parallel an example would be something as simple as a word counter. In this example, the input data comes in and the first step is to split that data into individual rows effectively smaller pieces then mapping that data to a key and a value shuffling the data into groups the data can then be reduced into a key-value table that’s easily queried in this case the table represents the number of times the word dog-cat car and house are present in the initial data set given that an HPC the large problems are broken down into smaller ones. In order to run more in parallel and get better aggregate performance accelerators can be used in many stages of the process for relational databases such as PostgreSQL and the data access compression filtering or replication of the data memory mapping and data caching are areas where accelerators can be used to offload the host processor and provide better system throughput for non SQL or no SQL systems like Cassandra and for i/o acceleration within the system accelerators can be used with the networking interconnects to perform processing inline or with data compression encryption and decryption data encoding and decoding or things like hashing are all areas where accelerators like FPGAs can be used to provide higher bandwidth and lower latency results so in summary with the larger and larger datasets being developed and acquired they require distributing of computing resources to solve these problems in a timely manner. It’s not realistic to just do this in a dedicated device it needs to be distributed across the data center or cloud environments for scale so there are several open-source HPC frameworks that are available today to be used to do this and they’re evolving constantly providing easier and faster methods to organize the data to process the data with those large data sets and with these methods of distributing the data processing across compute nodes breaking the problems down into smaller sub problems and distributing them there are many areas for where accelerators can be used to improve performance.

These are actually on their micro D sub ports but this hop one is actually parallel and the bottom one is for an IUI Ethernet attachment interface so that’s a bit interesting because pops the machine just uses the size they have to use these smaller ports so you need adapters to use these then the standard twisty Pirie turn it a serial port a pair of them see a serial be it up here we have 13 w 3 connector for the monitor but unlike oh the next station does just dopey the normal seg signals of VGA requires so a simple chip adapter such as this they can book in variant that deputy w3 connection to a regular VGA port so you can use a normal monitor with it then finally over here on the side here you see we have the connection for the keyboard and mouse which goes through on a sort of bus to the most connect to the keyboard and then the keyboard connects into here and then finally some audio ports so this actually does have built-in sound there’s then these sort of blanks here wearing a traditional cards then we’ll take a look at that and we get inside so now let’s take the top off this machine and see what we haven’t saved so there’s various screws on the back but the ones take a little four actually labeled two little arrows here and here so we can do that fairly easily so that just when I hear it’s the one has a mop on it oh cool so you see there’s the little locking mechanism with the padlock hole and finally this screw here which will see that your spring-loaded captive screws I’ll stay in the machine so notice it lid off or you just carefully lift up and remove from machine the one problem with this is the lid actually has these sort of plastic clips on it here it’s actually made to have three of these but two of them have broken off because just as plastic gets all the gets brittle so I still got one of these let me support having to glue it back home super glue just doesn’t hold it so did you have one of these be very careful because these little clips are quite fragile where you take the front of the machine off so there’s insane let it’s quite beefy will really be visually solid think that there’s actually got metal under it like under this sort of thin foil actually a much thicker piece of metal so it’s quite sturdy so that’s the lid I know that’s off.
let’s take a look at all we have inside so in the front of the machine here we can see the speaker and the power LED that I mentioned before we’ll start hidden behind the front panel normally so here we are inside the drive bay of the machine so over here is where the optical drive and floppy drive would be so the floppy drive we go down the bottom and then the optical drive would go up the top however you do need a special sort of half high optical drive which is very to get however you can just use a standard scuzzy drive you use one wheel to fit it in the case there’s a cable to connect the scuzzy cd-rom drive up and there is molex power connector with these machines you do need to be quite careful with discussing settings on the optical drive to make sure it’s set to the right and scuzzy ID and things like that but once you’ve done that you can just use a standard drive to boot so know here we’re looking at the hard drive B so we have this two point one gig Seagate hard drive which is mounted in here so Scaasi drive and there’s space for two hard drives there’s another SDA connector above for a second hard drive to be fitted in when I got this machine however it didn’t have either hard drive or the caddy here instead the previous one I just attached a scuzzy hard drive to this cable here and it we just literally flopping around in cd-rom drive B so how to buy the caddy and import that from Russia so it could actually attach the hard drive properly.
Here’s the caddy adjust this clear plastic thing and to remove the drive you press this button in and it lifts up there you’ll see you in and lifted up the drive will then slide away from the backplane and disconnect itself so it’s going to move no so that’s the hard drive no disengaging the connector and remove from machine you can just lift it up like that so you can see this and say there’s the sames drive with a little locking mechanism it’s out there and the driver just screwed in use using four screws on the bottom of it there so that’s a hard drive and then you can see the second a CA connector this was connected to so here we can see the CPU in this machine this is a 70 megahertz Sun micro spark – it was also available with 85 and 100 10 megahertz micro sparks so this is a low estate in CPU this machine was available with you can also get it with 170 megahertz turrible spark which is at the top end option so it’s just a CPU just no simple socket is not got any sort of locking mechanism it’s leather just held the metal pressure of the pins and there’s a heating on top which is weird it’s like three is it three yeah three just disks start on top of each other so we were sort of design put up require much cooling or this chip is not bad power-hungry here’s the power connection to the motherboard which officer put the proprietary layout and then behind here is the scuzzy connector that goes out to the drives then behind this you see that which is just a standard floppy connector for the floppy drive also interesting to note it is actually a card edge connector on this PCB on the motherboard here and on the other side up next to the so don’t what that would be used for now looking over here we can see the other run so there’s a tram slots M in total so this can give up to 256 Meg’s of RAM if there are fully populated with 32 make sticks currently I only have 230 to make sticks this machine is a total of 64 Meg’s of RAM it is take out here it’s a substandard it’s a sort of proprietary Sun stick so it’s not standard PC Ram or anything so guys are there there’s a part number on the other side of it mmm it’sa be she and you can see it’s got these additional chips here and that’s because this is error correcting called ECC memory because also this is a sort of workstation a server type thing so here we can see the expansion slots this machine has so it has 3x bus slots one here one used by the frame buffer and a third here these are substandard slots use on various Sun machines however unique the sparcstation 5 it also has this additional EFX slot which is available for several a special frame buffer cards that’s just much better than the one that’s used here but they weren’t really using any other slot machines itself it’s got way more connectors also salt and a lotta design for a cup of a fancy car compared to the base against bus ones so here they’re the they’re free buffer cards in this machine so we take that out there’s these little plastic Clips here the flip down over the back to release it.
they don’t really work very well and then you can just lift off the card by use this will handle back which release it from the slot and then unhooks like that so there’s our frame buffer card so standard sort of frame buffer card from the ages a sort of BT round dots and stuff and there’s the – double three connect we’re looking at on the back and bottom the card is not really much and then you can see there is the connector for the S bus so no taking the frame buffer out we can see a bit more of the motherboard so we’re here we can see this cable which connects the power LED and the speaker here is the sound adapter so this is the crystal stone chip so it starts a soda card essentially and then here we have the good old Sun nvram check with built-in battery on this machine again it slightly ultra fiver looked at before the battery in this chips date which is a complete pain and we’ll see when we turn it on the problem that causes and it is possible to change the battery in these but you have to be so part of the chip off battery which isn’t that easy so that’s what you see under the machine under the freedom of record and then finally over here we can see the power supply which is just fairly typical it’s very typical for the time and sense that has most the current available on the 5 volt reel which is a big contrast to current power supplies where everything’s 12 volt generally so yeah that’s perfect more there so now we’ll put this machine back together and take a look at running so I’m gonna hook the Machine up to monitor using that adaption showed earlier along with the Sun tape 5 keyboard and a regular Sun Mouse so I turn it on and see it running so you can use a switch on the back turn on her if you don’t use a button.
the keyboard do play cycle here look here at beep and the between your start to boot up so very low deled hard driving here there so you can see the machine is running we’re getting the dreaded message seeing the ID prom contents are invalid this is what was talking about earlier with the battery being bait so as no just continues going to try and boot from the network and rather than seeing its hard drive because it doesn’t understand that it’s forgotten its MAC address it’s just really quite unhappy right now but you can see there it is a spark station 5 so you actually see even though this is branded as a spark sun microsystems server even the farmer still safe spark station and Weasley’s was a 64 Meg’s of RAM and yeah it’s just doing this so I know how is a huge list of commands that I need to run on a poster look so he’s run all these commands and that allow me to set the MAC address correctly so once I’ve done that I’ll be able to boot machine so we’ll just do that now so we’re gonna press stop e you’ll drop us the ok prompt and then I can enter these commands to set my address so those commands no stay at the MAC address in memory and know what you need to do is run a command which those changes checks on that’s in the ID prom so to make it a valid sort of click the able successfully pass the check check the authority of it so no do is to set the checks on yeah so that should have no set of checks on so now hopefully if we reboot the machine or reset is it yep machine on a reboot so hopefully this time it will boot up and try and book the hard drive so here we can see the machine is busied up again and though it’s not complaining about the ID prom contents being a valid anymore and we can see the MAC address is now set to what I set from there not too hard so you see there we go so now you can see it still trying to it from the network because that must just be the default boot device you could set a flag to change that so we’ll just tell to boot from the hard drive so we’re going to stop here on keyboard and tape in boot disk and that will no tell the group and hard drive so you see here we’re running son away for point one point for this machine was right on the sort of period where they’re transitioning between Sun wakes and Solaris so a lot of shops under wax on it just because it’s the oldest son machine I have currently and I maybe will try something different I’ve already got some other machines.
so you see that’s a booting up so no login prompt so if I were to log in as root here we go to a shell prompt over Logan is a standard user it will take me in and it’ll see it start to open windows and you can press control C to stop that and drop the shell over onload with the open windows graphic graphical environment which available and you I still have no idea how it works but here is I can’t really do much with it because it’s written fusing but we can see it running so it beeped and though there’s the graphic environment order so here we have the graphic environment lilies and over here we can see there’s a health program so you can actually see it you get help with system and there’s split four pages in that I’ll cuber box you got a standard shell using cxh and here’s a file browser so you can browse through the machine and now view that if you right-click any on desktop you get it’s made you pop-up where you can pop this at various programs the Euro solar calculator for example which interesting opens a shale and then opens the calculator but yeah that there’s got things like that various tools on here audio tool this is you can record audio – there’s no microphone connected but that’s what cool so it’s got to stop here so the programs that are built into the operating system and I don’t know how many of these work to be honest or not too much detail on them there’s like CPU meter it’s kind of cool so yeah so that’s the operating system I’m doing no too much motor so I can’t run too much detail now although work something out and use a little bit more to get more used to using it I might go do another video showing the Opera adjustment a bit more detail so now if I figure out shut this down so you pointed to exit just go over to exit there we go and that’s going to log me out and opposed to control see it will drop it’s our prompt and I can produce her off here yeah back piece on the rock is really here that he’s going to routes okay log out there and novels route with password a password and then we can know each other copy excited there with is beeping and there you know CHS endowed so no drop the okay prompt an eternity not which is power – off as machine no power down so that was a look at my son sparks however five or sparcstation five essentially.
