I’ll give you an overview of the HPE take portfolio with LTO 8 with the day explosion you need a cost-effective approach to archive data I’ll talk about how but before I do let me give you three surprising numbers 5.1 million 96,000 petabytes and 82% what do those numbers mean 5.1 million is the installed base of LTO tape drive 96,000 petabytes is the capacity of tape media that was shipped in 2016 an 82% of customers plan to maintain or increase their use of tape for archive where does HPE fit into the tape market based on the latest data which is first half 2017 HPE is the number one LTO tape drive vendor with 33.9% worldwide share an HP DAT 160 is number one tape autoload vendor with 42.1% worldwide share and that’s almost double the revenue of the nearest competitors tapes value proposition is as relevant today as ever has been with its core benefits still pertinent in the market despite new and emerging technologies there are four qualities I want to mention its economic tape is still the lowest cost storage medium for long term data retention it just Oh point zero zero seven cents per gigabyte for life efficient tapes energy consumption is less than two percent of a hard drive for the equivalent amount of storage it’s highly scalable new LTO eight tape cartridges hold up to 30 terabytes compressed and 12 terabytes native and its secure tape provides an added layer of offline and off-site protection against ransomware LTO eight tape technologies now available across the HP DAT SAS portfolio.
Let me hit a couple of the LTO eight highlights as I mentioned the capacity is at 30 terabytes compressed with 12 terabytes native and that’s double the capacity of LTO seven it’s an incredibly reliable with only one error per one times ten to the nineteen bits that’s just one error for every 200,000 LTO eight cartridges and you can leverage unused LTO seven media by adding a label to it that’s called a type media label this gives customers the lowest for gigabyte option for tape and it can store up to twenty two point five terabytes of compressed data more than the same tape and an LTO seven tape drive let’s look at the HPE store over LTO tape portfolio at the entry level there’s the HPE store ever LTO eight ultrium 3750 tape drive with up to 30 terabytes of capacity and up to 300 megabytes per second the next two products are ideal for SMBs and distributed environments the 1/8 g2 autoloader scales to 240 terabytes while the MSL 20:24 with LTO 8 has up to 720 terabytes of capacity with 24 cartridge slots next let’s look at the mid-range first the MSL 4048 which scales to 48 cartridges for drives in 1.4 for petabytes a new entry in our mid-range portfolio is the MSL 30 40 it has a base unit and an expansion module the base has from one to three drives and up to 32 slots for a total of 960 terabytes of compressed data you can add up to 6 expansion units in a 41u rack the MSL 3040 expansion module has 40 slots and this gives you a total of up to 720 two slots 21 drives and 8.1 6 petabytes the MSL 64 80 is similar with a base and expansion modules the MSL 64 80 base module has 80 slots and from 1 to 6 drives.
The base enclosures maximum capacity is 2.4 petabytes the MSL 64 80 expansion module has the same number of slots and drives in total capacity but where this really grows is when you take that expansion module and put it in a rack and again you can have from 1 to 7 modules in Iraq which gives you from 80 to 560 slots 1 2 42 drives and up to 16.8 petabytes I think a differentiator for the store ever family is the tape library management software so let’s mention that briefly command view for tape libraries has Diagnostics reporting predictions tape performance and utilization tape assure advanced verifies the health of your tape drives and cartridges and runs tests that will trigger an alert if there’s problem diagnostics proactively run tests on your library data verification verifies that the data that is being written to the tape is cleaned and validated library tape tools which runs on a server then the free license and proactively runs tape library diagnostics lastly I want to mention the HPE tape solutions for large enterprises and high-performance computing that we brought into the portfolio in 2017 the HPE T 950 tape library is between one and eight frames from one to 120 drives and 50 to just over 10,000 LTO slots in a maximum capacity of 300 point six petabytes it uses blue scale management if you thought that was a lot of capacity there’s the HP T Finity exascale tape library it’s between 3 and 44 frames from 1 to 144 drives and 50 to over 53,000 LTO slots for a maximum capacity of 1.6 exabytes Wow and it also uses blue scale management when you need economic efficient scalable and secure tape storage HPE store ever LTO 8 is the answer to learn more go to hp.com Orage slash tape always love to hear from you on twitter where you can find me as calvin zito you can find my blog at hp.com slash blog until next time thanks for joining me on this around the storage black chalk talk
